Vv. 35b, 36 God is merciful and gracious to the wicked, who don¡¯t know his grace, although they might not be deserving love (Mt 5:45). Love for the enemy is a duty for the Lord¡¯s people, who were underserved, yet received Father¡¯s compassion and grace. As we remember his love towards us while we were still his enemies, let us pray that God removes our desire for revenge against our enemies and gives us a worshipful heart.
Vv. 27-30 God says that we are not to be against the wicked people, but we are to overcome the wickedness with goodness. He tells us to not to treat our enemies as they deserve but to treat them with goodness, even if they mistreat us. The world decides who they love and pays the wicked back with evil, but the disciples of Jesus have to give up the right for revenge. We are called to fight by love and to overcome evil with goodness. A peaceful life is God¡¯s alternative to the world.
Vv. 32-35 Loving those who love us, treating well those who treat us with goodness, and giving with the expectation to receive is a common sense. We cannot love our enemies based on this expectation and this makes it hard to put the true love given by the Father into practice. Jesus' love goes beyond
common ethics and reasonable approach. Jesus expected the greatest reward, to be the son of the Most High. Therefore, we, as his disciples, should not love expecting love in return.
Father, help me to overcome evil with goodness and treat others with forgiveness, courage, love and compassion.
