  • 10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.
11 For thus Amos has said, "'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.'"
12 And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there,
13 but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom."
14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, "I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs.
15 But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
16 Now therefore hear the word of the LORD. "You say, 'Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.'
17 Therefore thus says the LORD: "'Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.'"

Thinking & Understanding
Amaziah, an Israelite priest, criticised Amos for proclaiming God’s upcoming judgment. He told Amos that while he could prophesy in the land of Judah, he could not do so in Bethel, the religious centre of Israel, and even tried to silence him (vv. 10-13). Amos was originally a shepherd and farmer based in Judah, but he was called by God to fulfil the role of a prophet. Amos ignored Amaziah’s words and boldly announced God’s judgment upon Amaziah and his family. For standing in the way of God’s will, Amaziah would suffer shame and pain (vv. 14-17).

Who is God?
Vv. 14-15a God calls the faithful to be His servants. He used Amos, a shepherd, to speak His Word; not Amaziah, the priest of Bethel. God does not look at one’s position in society but at our attitudes toward the Word. Our strength and abilities are not what qualify us as laborers for His kingdom. Instead, He uses those whose feet are ready to obey at His beck and call.

What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 15-16a Amos did not give in to Amaziah’s threats, which tried to impede him from prophesying, but obeyed God’s commands. It was a bold act that did not consider any other factor other than God’s command. How faithfully am I fulfilling the role God has called me to? A sense of calling is what drives you to do your part right.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to hear your Word without reservation and speak it as it is.
